Team Bushikai Places 3rd at Takemori Open

June 5th , 2010 was the Takemori Open hosted by the College Park Judo Club . The morning started with a competitors clinic taught by Kudan Jimmy Takemori for whom this tournament (along with his brother Edwin) is named. Bushikai entered 5 competitors, with Colby Horning fighting in two divisions. The other competitors were Yusuf Genderguno, fighting in his first competition, AJ Child, Aiden Flint, and Orlagh McKenzie.

Yusuf started off the competiton for Bushikai with an ippon victory, and followed with a second ippon in his next match to take Gold in his division. Colby Horning followed with 6 straight ippons to take Gold in both his divisions. AJ Child also came strong with three ippon victories.

Aiden Flint won his first match with ippon, lost his second match by pin, and won his final match by ippon to take silver. Orlagh followed with two consecutive ippons, only to lose to an uchi mata for ippon by Rachel from Sport Judo.

Team Bushikai posted an amazing 15-2 overall record with all wins by ippon. We brought home 4 gold medals and two silver, and placed third overall as a team out of 16 teams. First place went to perennial junior judo powerhouse College Park Judo with the largest number of competitors and Sport Judo took second. Both of these teams entered far more competitors, and there were many other schools entered with more competitors but due to the outstanding efforts of our team members we had a very successful day. I point this out only because I want our readers to understand what an incredible effort our kids put forth and attempt to emphasize the difficulty of achieving this placing. Congratulations team, We are so proud of you!

Aiden Flint takes Silver at 2010 Beltsville Spring Judo Open

Aiden Flint, fighting in his first competition in almost 9 months won his first match by throwing his opponent for waza-ari and pinning with kesa-gatame. His second match was won by ippon with a nice o-goshi. He dropped his third match to the eventual gold medal winner after allowing his pin to be reversed, but came back strong in the final match to win with another ippon to take the silver.

Orlagh McKenzie also took second in her division earning the Silver Medal

2010 Virginia State Open Results

On Saturday February 20, the Virginia Open was held at the Barcroft Sport and Fitness Center in Arlington. Team Bushikai Hidama took three competitors to the tournament. After a delayed start, competition got underway with the youngest  Boys divisions first. All divisions were round robin. Being that this was our first competition since November, there was some mat rust to overcome and that was evident in all of our fighters.  Overall we had a good day however, bringing home two medals with three competitors.

Results:
A.J. Child - three fights - One win by Ippon, two losses by Ippon. Well fought second and third matches. No Placing.

  1. Colby Horning - eleven fights (two divisions) - Six wins by Ippon, five losses by Ippon (pinned twice). Outstanding effort throughout. Silver medal Boys age 7 middleweight.
Orlagh Mackenzie - Three fights - Two wins by Ippon, One loss by yuko (questionable call with only 7 seconds left). I never argue calls because I know being a referee is a tough enough job and most of them at local tournaments are less experienced, but I will mention them when discussing the matches. I will grant that Orlagh made a strategic mental mistake in going for a major throw being up 1 waza-ari plus 1 yuko to her opponents 2 yuko. I like that attitude of constant attacking and though it cost her the match because of fatigue, her opponents counter was at best yuko. I will give Orlagh credit for mental toughness though because she came back later to beat that same girl in 33 seconds with a waza-ari Ogoshi and pin for Ippon.
Gold medal 12-13 Girls Lightweight Division

Leadership Change at Bushikai

It is with deep regret that we announce the departure of Kaicho Michael McGee from the Bushikai Dojo in Frederick, Maryland. As you may know, McGee Sensei founded the Bushikai Dojo from the Genbukan Maryland Dojo after departing from the Genbukan system. However in recent years his involvement in the daily activities of the Bushikai has waned, though he continues to actively train at his personal dojo in West Virginia. McGee Sensei intends to continue his personal training with a select few students. He has decided that the Bushikai dojo in Frederick should continue in its present form without him at the helm.

In late 2001, daily operation of the dojo was turned over to Harry Mackenzie, Renshi, while McGee Sensei continued to function in the role of Kaicho, directing the development of curriculum and overseeing the operation of the Bushikai organization and its affiliate branches. Over the following years, Mackenzie Renshi assumed more and more of the responsibility for oversight of the affiliate branches as well as growth of the headquarters dojo, while McGee Sensei focused more on the development of curriculum and other various projects.

With the departure of McGee Sensei, Mackenzie Renshi has assumed full authority for the Bushikai dojo in Frederick and its various functions, and any questions regarding the future direction of this Dojo and its affiliate in Nova Scotia should be directed to him. This change has resulted in the relinquishing of the title of Hombucho by Mackenzie Renshi and a change of name for the Dojo in Frederick. The dojo is now known as Bushikai Bugei Hidama Dojo.

We wish success to McGee Sensei in his future endeavors and thank him for his many years of service to Bushikai and the Frederick martial arts community.
