The students are currently studying medieval Japan in their Social Studies class and the field trip was planned as a fun, supplemental educational experience by their teacher, Mrs. Stacy Ukishima. They heard about famous warriors and events of the Samurai era and were treated to a special demonstration of swordsmanship from the Tenshinsho Jigen Ryu tradition, a system that was founded in the early 1500s.

Harry Mackenzie, head instructor at Bushikai, and a member of the Tenshinsho Jigen Ryu, said the purpose of this special lesson was to teach the students about the values and lifestyle of the famous warriors of Japan and show how these values have translated into modern Japanese life. Special permission for this demonstration was granted by Grandmaster Ueno Doushin and Chief Instructor Ueno Kagenori, from Saitama, Japan.

A special message was sent to the Trinity students from Sensei Sugiyama Keitaro who acts as the translator for the Grandmaster in Japan. “I wish you to know that Budo (warrior path) and martial arts are a little bit different. Although they have many things in common, the meaning of the word "Bu 武" is not "to fight" but "to stop fighting". If you take the kanji 武 apart, 戈 means "a weapon". 止　means "to stop". And "Do 道" is not an "art" but “a path" that everyone can walk together for the same destination, regardless of age, gender, nationality, knowledge, or skill.” Mr. Mackenzie further explained that “Long ago warriors disciplined themselves and trained in the ways of killing. Now we train in these ways to help us become better people through self-discipline and to promote world peace and understanding.”

After the demonstration the students of Trinity School enjoyed a delicious lunch of Japanese food at the TJ Asian Bistro and got to sit on the mats of a traditional “tatami” dining room. The children then signed their greetings and well-wishes to the people of Japan on traditional rice paper, which will then be forwarded to the Grandmaster of Tenshinsho Jigen Ryu to share with his students and community in Kasukabe, Saitama, Japan.

Dr. THOMAS MALONE, SR.

With great regret we report the passing of Dr. Thomas Malone Sr., on March 7, 2011, after a protracted illness.

Bornin Henderson North Carolina in 1926, he was a resident of Potomac Maryland for the last 42 years

He was the second to last surviving sibling of five brothers and sisters, three boys and two girls. The morning started with a competitors clinic taught by Kudan Jimmy Takemori for whom this tournament (along with his brother Edwin) is named. AJ Child also came strong with three ippon victories.

Aiden Flint won his first match with ippon, lost his second match by pin, and won his final match by ippon to take silver. We brought home 4 gold medals and two silver, and placed third overall as a team out of 16 teams. First place went to perennial junior judo powerhouse College Park Judo with the largest number of competitors and Sport Judo took second. Both of these teams entered far more competitors, and there were many other schools entered with more competitors but due to the outstanding efforts of our team members we had a very successful day. I point this out only because I want our readers to understand what an incredible effort our kids put forth and attempt to emphasize the difficulty of achieving this placing. Team Bushikai Hidama took three competitors to the tournament. After a delayed start, competition got underway with the youngest Boys divisions first. All divisions were round robin. Being that this was our first competition since November, there was some mat rust to overcome and that was evident in all of our fighters. Overall we had a good day however, bringing home two medals with three competitors.

Results:
A.J. Child - three fights - One win by Ippon, two losses by Ippon. Well fought second and third matches. No Placing.

Colby Horning - eleven fights (two divisions) - Six wins by Ippon, five losses by Ippon (pinned twice). Outstanding effort throughout. I never argue calls because I know being a referee is a tough enough job and most of them at local tournaments are less experienced, but I will mention them when discussing the matches. I will grant that Orlagh made a strategic mental mistake in going for a major throw being up 1 waza-ari plus 1 yuko to her opponents 2 yuko. I like that attitude of constant attacking and though it cost her the match because of fatigue, her opponents counter was at best yuko. I will give Orlagh credit for mental toughness though because she came back later to beat that same girl in 33 seconds with a waza-ari Ogoshi and pin for Ippon.
Gold medal 12-13 Girls Lightweight Division

Leadership Change at Bushikai

It is with deep regret that we announce the departure of Kaicho Michael McGee from the Bushikai Dojo in Frederick, Maryland. As you may know, McGee Sensei founded the Bushikai Dojo from the Genbukan Maryland Dojo after departing from the Genbukan system. However in recent years his involvement in the daily activities of the Bushikai has waned, though he continues to actively train at his personal dojo in West Virginia. McGee Sensei intends to continue his personal training with a select few students. He has decided that the Bushikai dojo in Frederick should continue in its present form without him at the helm.

In late 2001, daily operation of the dojo was turned over to Harry Mackenzie, Renshi, while McGee Sensei continued to function in the role of Kaicho, directing the development of curriculum and overseeing the operation of the Bushikai organization and its affiliate branches. Over the following years, Mackenzie Renshi assumed more and more of the responsibility for oversight of the affiliate branches as well as growth of the headquarters dojo, while McGee Sensei focused more on the development of curriculum and other various projects.

With the departure of McGee Sensei, Mackenzie Renshi has assumed full authority for the Bushikai dojo in Frederick and its various functions, and any questions regarding the future direction of this Dojo and its affiliate in Nova Scotia should be directed to him. This change has resulted in the relinquishing of the title of Hombucho by Mackenzie Renshi and a change of name for the Dojo in Frederick. The dojo is now known as Bushikai Bugei Hidama Dojo.

We wish success to McGee Sensei in his future endeavors and thank him for his many years of service to Bushikai and the Frederick martial arts community.

Orlagh Wins Gold at 2009 Philadelphia Cup

Orlagh Mckenzie and Colby Horning competed at the inaugural Philadelphia Cup Judo Tournament on November 7th.

Orlagh won a tough first match with Kosoto Gari for ippon. We are looking forward to some new faces joining the competition team this fall.

Embu Taikai 2008

Embu Taikai, our annual celebration of the dojo, consists of a
demonstration for all the family and friends of the members; and
culminates with a potluck dinner. Especially noteworthy was the beautiful Ippon by Koshi Guruma that Jordan Goodman threw his opponent with in his third match. This was Jordan's first competition and he won two of his three matches. Both wins were by ippon with the other a loss coming by pin.

Tom Huebner also had a beautiful Tai Otoshi for Ippon in his second match. His third match was against an Ippon Seoi Nage specialist. Tom did a spectacular one armed handspring to turn out
from what was surely a victory for his opponent. Tom began repeatedly attacking with his Tai otoshi but lost his sleeve grip which cost him a hard fought match as his opponent capitalized on his mistake to throw him with another ippon seoi nage.

Leah Standing threw for ippon with a strong Osoto Gake in her final match of the day. This made up for her loss in the previous match when Leah fell to her knees after a throw attempt and her opponent simply pushed her onto her back from the knees and was awarded waza-ari(!?!) for it.

Aidan Flint redeemed his previous loss by throwing his team-mate A.J. Child for ippon with a well executed Sukuinage.

Orlagh Mckenzie extended her streak to three consecutive shiai of making an opponent cry with her powerful Kesa Gatame. (Not that I approve of making opponents cry, though it is a decisive way to end a match). She recovered from an earlier bout of nausea that forced her to withdraw
from her earlier match.

The team was rounded out by Calum Mckenzie and Iain Standing, both of whom made impressive gains without reaching the win column. By sticking with their game plans and continuing to improve their execution, I expect they will both rebound strongly into the medal rounds in upcoming shiai.

Welcome to the Bushikai Bugei Dojo

Here you will find news and information on the Bushikai Bugei Hidama Dojo and Hidama Martial Arts Center located at One Wormans Mill Court in Frederick Maryland.
